There was talk about the Utopian Neverland the city calls the Fairgounds Redevelopment Plan that is going to bring hundreds of millions of dollars to to the city because....well because they say it will and they had a crafty little presentation to demonstrate this with buzzwords like....maximize, incentivize, free money, minimum risk, tail-gating, revenue stream, rainbows, butterflies, & unicorns (I might have added a few of those)...you get the point.
Councilmen Reid Hedgepeth said if we don't do this it will be the biggest missed opportunity Memphis has ever missed out on...or something close to that. He cited the Pyramid as a recent example of success for these type projects. I don't know if Bass Pro Shops is going to allow us to see the return on millions of dollars lost on the Pyramid, but I have one word for you....Sidney Schlenker....need I say more?
Once again, this issue was delayed for another 2 weeks which is usually what happens when they don't have the votes to pass something the big boys want. I'll let you infer who the big boys might be. Hint, some of you know them...most of you do not.
My beef with this has always been about free market issues. If this is such a great idea, why is the free market not financing it? I'll tell you why. They see RISK and UNCERTAINTY in this area and until you fix the critical problems within this community, projects like this will amount to nothing more than lipstick on a pig. Lipstick on a pig seems to be the common theme of government. I don't mind the lipstick on the pig but I do mind the government spending taxpayer dollars to buy the lipstick and then telling me it's free money, there is no risk, there is no uncertainty blah blah blah. At the end of the day.. the citizen is left with ....LIPSTICK ON A PIG!
There was more, but nothing exciting or particularly damaging from what I could tell...not to worry, there's always next time...
