Nada! But for the taxpayer, that is probably the best outcome we could hope for out of todays fiasco.
Commissioner Basar, better known here as Darth Basar, couldn't find it within his pretend Republican alter ego to vote for a 4 cent reduction in the property tax rate. Maybe if they had only asked for a 1 cent reduction in the tax rate...then the Republican commissioner could have voted for it right? Wrong! Or maybe...if only Shelby County had a 6 million dollar surplus from last year, then he could at least pretend that he is working for the people by returning THEIR money! But alas...Darth Basar's alter ego was nowhere to be found. He aided all of the democrats in defeating any kind of tax reduction.
The commission approved a stable county property tax rate of $4.37 on the first of three readings at Monday’s commission meeting. (Stable in this sentence sounds much better than high)
Thanks Darth Basar for reminding us why you will not be reelected to Republican office here again. Keep up the good work, maybe at this rate, next year you will get 2 votes for the chairmanship you so desperately wanted instead of one.
There was a judicial appointment that was supposed to take place today....In other action Monday, the commission delayed the appointment of a new judicial commissioner as well on Monday with many of the 15 applicants for the position in the audience. Now you could be forgiven for thinking this was benign without the typical theater that accompanies...well everything on the agenda but don't think for a minute this wasn't political. Let me sum it up for you in one sentence. Melvin Burgess didn't have enough votes for his guy so he deferred this back to committee at which time he will have swindled enough votes to get his guy passed. Darth Basar....Melvin Burgess is on line one!
Oh what else, what else... oh yeah...Three detective positions were removed to make room for the former director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, Bob Nations, and former county commissioner Sidney Chism. This is something that would only happen in the Shelby County Twilight Zone of Tennessee. Unfortunately, we all reside there and only by the grace of God do we escape the crazies sometimes. And by crazies, I mean some of our elected officials who live to serve only their selfish egos.
Thankfully the commission was not in productive mode so this too was sent back to committee. Citizens of Shelby County hear me now: June 22, the next full commission meeting, you need to show up in droves to speak out against this. I think we can all agree that we do not need ex term limited Sidney Chism as a Public Information Specialist making 69,000 a year. I'll take the three detective positions you eliminated thank you very much!
One more ridiculous item that was discussed in the county's twilight zone was this...A proposal by commissioner Willie Brooks to set up a pool of $1.3 million in county funding to be divided among the 13 county commissioner equally at $100,000 each and make an additional $600,000 in grants to seven nonprofits survived Monday as an amendment.
I challenge county commission to take a poll of the voting taxpaying public and see if they would approve of some walking around money for each commissioner so they can buy votes...sheesh!
Thankfully, this too was delayed until June 22...at which time the games will commence!
