They tax rate stays the same. I guess we can be thankful for small mercies....
So each commissioner gets 100,000 to give to non-profits in their district. Interesting that even the City Council voted down this with Shea Flinn saying this about it "Giving elected officials a fund to bestow to whomever they choose allows that official to get “individual” credit for giving away public dollars...
When you start parceling it out, it’s pork barrel spending at its highest”. Touché FlinnShady...Touché.
Now onto matters of the King
Another contentious issue discussed was the Deferred Compensation Plan for county employees which is changing plan providers from Nationwide to Prudential because King Luttrell has some friends at Prudential. For the record, I don't know that to be true, it's just a guess. Nothing in government happens by accident or because the ruling elite found a better deal for the taxpayers. Things happen because of ...well...Science. The Political Science of Crony Capitalism that is...
At the last meeting, commissioners debated this issue and why this decision was solely left up to the King of Shelby County. The county's attorney said that because the plan is voluntary and the funds come from the employees and not actual Shelby County Funds that it doesn't have to go before the commission. Hmmm....The general fund comes from the pocket of taxpayers (albeit not voluntarily) and not actually Shelby County itself...so by that logic...perhaps the King of Shelby County should be making all the financial decisions and not leaving that up for debate among our democratically elected officials serving in what was formerly known as a "REPUBLIC"???
Hmmmm. By the county attorney's opinion...is there anything the commission should be voting on? Even the fees and fines collected by Shelby County are collected by a bureaucracy PAID FOR BY TAXPAYERS OF SHELBY COUNTY! Not the county itself.
The commission wanted to hire an outside attorney to decide this matter since they thought there was a conflict of interest. Now, I question why the county should hire former commissioner Julian Bolton to the tune of 250.00/hour although he couldn't answer how many hours or months it might take to resolve this issue but at 250 per hour it would behoove you to have a ball park idea...just sayin...that business proposal wouldn't be approved in the private sector but...I digress.
I'm sure there are several qualified attorneys who could fill this role...not just Julian Bolton but for some reason....Political Science...that was who Van Turner and I'm quite sure Walter Bailey wanted.
The county's attorney took issue with the idea that there might be a conflict of interest with the King's APPOINTED attorney saying the council did not have the right to decide if there was a conflict of interest. The King's attorney has spoken and dictated that there is no conflict of interest...end of story right? WRONG!
Just because you say it's so....doesn't make it so. So let's look at the basic facts here.
Mayor Luttrell in his last reigning years has taken on an oligarchical style of governance. it happens to a lot of elected officials..see Bill Oldham's acquiescence to the King's appointment of former commissioner Sidney Chism to the Sheriff's Department as Community Relations Specialist (65,000/year). Go ahead, try to find out the taxpayers ROI on that salary and while you are at it...what he actually does. Did I mention they eliminated 3 detective positions to pay for it? Anyways, you get the gist. It's all about politics and the Shelby County Attorney knows where his allegiance lies...if he wants to keep working....he will err on the side of the King who has the power to remove him. Hence....the conflict of interest he claims doesn't exist.
You gotta love it though. The only reason your ELECTED officials get away with this is because the average citizen has no idea who their leaders are or what they are doing. 4 citizens changed the votes of 2 leaders. What would 12 have done?
All politics is local and all citizens have power there. Your government will stop acting irresponsibly when YOU decide to make them....
