There were approximately 10 citizens at the meeting which is an improvement and hopefully there will be more at the next meeting.
The meeting began with Commissioner Bailey stating that he was not going to add any new explanations for why we wanted the chair appointees reconsidered. It's often very hard to hear Commissioner Bailey because he won't speak into the microphone. As long as I have been attending these meetings, this has been a problem and the 1st citizen to speak asked the Commissioner to repeat his statements because no one out in the audience could hear him. You can hear him on the video better than we could hear him in the audience so listen to the video below and decide for yourself whether or not he makes ANY sense. He stated something like this ...
Commissioner Bailey "Mr. Chairman, for reasons voiced at the last meeting, when this item was presented, I again voice my objection, and it's well known to the rationale behind it."
Citizen 1 "Chairman Ford, can you ask the Commissioner Bailey to repeat what he just said, we in the audience couldn't hear him?"
Commissioner Bailey "I don't choose to further elaborate in terms of my further objection to these appointments, I stand on the rationale that was voiced at the last meeting."
Citizen 1 "The rationale of what sir?"
Commissioner Bailey "I, heh, heh, heh, I, uh, uh, I, I, The remarks and comments I made at the last commission meeting, I adopt in terms of my rationale for opposing them today"
Got it? Yeah, me neither. I'm guessing he's referring to his comments about how there must have been something nefarious going on for 6 republicans and 1 democrat to elect the democrat chairman. Yeah, uhuh, just like there was something nefarious going on last year when the same exact thing happened when 6 republicans voted along with 1 or 2 democrats(I forget) to elect DEMOCRAT James Harvey and the year before when 6 democrats voted along with 1 republican to elect Mike Ritz Republican chairman. The difference this time? Bailey was one vote away from being chairman and losing was a bitter pill to swallow.
There were 3 other citizens who spoke in favor of confirming the appointments and 1 who spoke against. Watch them all, they had very good arguments . The only citizen speaking against this had something against Terry Roland which was slightly bizarre and I didn't quite understand why she was speaking against Roland since this vote was to confirm Chairman Ford's appointees, not Roland's.
I will leave you with a few words from citizen activist Charles Nelson whose 2 minutes are usually spot on and somewhat colorful. I mean that in the most positive way and I love the fact that he is just a regular citizen that knows the people actually do have some power in their community if they would only stand up and speak out. I truly believe all of the feedback these commissioners got from their constituents had a hand in how this turned out. Charles Nelson challenged Commissioner Bailey on why he kept coming back to this. When other democrat chairmen were elected, Bailey supported them. He told Mr. Bailey to cut this pettiness out, we all are too old for this, it's kindergarten. Charles said Ford was elected and he should be respected. Let's do the right thing and stop this racism and stop this childishness Mr. Bailey."
Yes...let's do Charles...let's do!
